Our Story
The only time of the year Wayne Richard and Mike Beshey aren’t out riding bicycles for recreation is when there is too much salt and sand on winter roads.
Dover Cyclery owner Wayne Richard, left, and Manager Mike Beshey stand next to the inventory of bicycles at their new Fourth Street shop.
Then they’re indoors, riding their bikes on trainers and itching for spring so they can pedal outside again.
The closure last summer of longtime Dover bicycle landmark Tony’s Cyclery on Fourth Street left a void for many avid fans of the sport. This included Richard and Beshey, who’ve ridden together for years, and count many friends among the area’s large mix of cyclists.
Lamenting Tony’s closure one day, Richard and Beshey decided to open their own shop, and Dover Cyclery was born.
Richard, 56, of Barrington, is a former building materials salesman. Dover resident Beshey, 50, has worked in cycle shops off and on for years. His experience even includes time at the original Tony’s Cyclery when it also had stores in Rochester and beyond.
Together, they form a natural team.
“We just love to ride,” explained Richard, “so it isn’t like work.”
They rented space in the former Holmwoods Furniture store at 21 Fourth St., across from the former Tony’s, and spent the winter fixing up the space. Dover Cyclery opened May 1, and other cycling enthusiasts have begun to find them.
On a recent weekday, a steady stream of bikes needing attention and shoppers looking for bikes and accessories kept the two busy.
They offer a full range of mechanical services, from fixing flats to rebuilding components. On the shop floor are bikes to fit almost everyone.
When they were researching the potential market, they figured there were enough people in the Dover and Durham areas to support the store. They’ve been surprised to see customers come from an even larger area, including southern Maine, Wolfeboro, Alton and beyond.
The shop’s motto says it all: “We ride, we service, we sell bicycles.”
Walk in and Beshey and Richard will talk about the sport all day with you, because that’s what they’re into. In their free time, they are out riding either with groups such as the “Bagelry Bikers” in Durham or on their own.
They each own a variety of bikes and ride three to five days a week. They do mostly road riding, but will switch to mountain biking when the mood hits them, especially in the crisp fall woods.
